​Northampton Town F.C. DJ “ruins” Whamageddon for 7,000 people

A DJ for Northampton Town F.C. has apologised after reportedly “ruining” Whamageddon, a game where players attempt to avoid Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ until December 24, for more than 7,000 people.

Matt Facer, aka DJ Matty, a disc jockey for the League Two football team, was performing at the Sixfields Stadium on December 2 during their game against Portsmouth when he decided to drop ‘Last Christmas’.

“I never knew people took it so seriously,” he explained (via BBC). “I gave it a spin, thinking it would be quite funny to wipe out 7,000 people who couldn’t avoid it, but clearly it isn’t funny.”

The DJ was met with backlash from fans who were attempting to play the cult game, which encourages players to last as long as possible without hearing the 1986 Christmas song.

He added that he received “a bit of an insult on Twitter, light-hearted,” with fans claiming that it “wasn’t a nice thing to do”. He added: “apparently that was quite tame to what was being said in the stadium.”

“So I officially apologise to everybody whose Christmas I’ve ruined,” he said in an apology. Talking to BBC Radio Northampton, DJ Matty promised not to play the song during Northampton’s next home game against Fleetwood Town to “avoid upsetting the Lancashire fans”.

He said: “I can take on the chin with my home fans and Portsmouth, but I don’t think I’ll be playing it again. I think it’s a shame people in professions like mine can’t play Wham! until [late] December, but it’s a game and we all have to jump on board.”

Whamageddon first started around 10 years ago, and now has its own dedicated website, merchandise, and a set of rules players must stick by, dubbed a “survival game”.
