An 18-year-old woman has died after becoming unwell at Glasgow nightclub SWG3 on New Year’s Day, forcing the club to close temporarily BBC reports.

The teenager is the third person in just four months to have passed away after attending the club — following the deaths of Scott Allison and Marcus Dick, both 18, in August.

The club has been closed temporarily as a mark of respect. Police Scotland are now looking at drugs as one line of inquiry as the club now faces a drug probe.

A spokesperson for SWG3 has said that after “spotting that she was in distress, our staff swiftly intervened, bringing her to the venue’s medical unit for examination.”

The woman’s death was reported to police on Friday (January 5). Next of kin were informed and inquiries remain ongoing to “establish the full circumstances”.

They added that “significant measures” were taken to prevent drugs from entering the club. SWG3 has been in touch with the woman’s family to offer support.

“The on-site medical team, composed of qualified and experienced professionals, promptly called for an ambulance as her condition deteriorated,” said the spokesperson for SWG3.

“Regrettably, despite these efforts, she did not survive. Every guest is thoroughly searched upon entry by our highly-trained, accredited security teams. These teams also conduct constant patrols within the venue.”

They added: “Furthermore, our qualified medical teams are consistently present at all major events. We have proactively decided to close the venue this weekend as a mark of respect and to enable us to regroup and re-evaluate with our staff.”

In August, two 18-year-olds died after attending a 10-hour outdoor rave at SWG3. The teenagers, who had attended the event as part of different groups, passed away within hours of each other.
