New book celebrates the music, fashion and people of the Haçienda

A new book coming out on October 10 will celebrate the many ‘Threads’ that made Manchester’s iconic Haçienda nightclub so legendary.

Compiled by Rebeca Hook, The Haçienda: Threads documents the music, fashion and culture of the institution through intimate photographs (shown here) and interviews with the people that were there, including DJs, fashion designers, performers, clubbers and staff.

With a forward written by Joy Division and New Order member Peter Hook, this book maintains an insider’s lens from the legendary bass player, who performed at the Haçienda many times and also partly financed it alongside Factory Records.

Other eye-witness accounts come from John Cooper Clark, Bez from the Happy Mondays, Noel Gallagher, Rowetta, Mani, Irvine Welsh, Andrew O’Hagan, Mike Pickering, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez.

Open from 1982 to 1997, the Haçienda played an enormous role in shaping the history of dance music and rave culture in the UK and beyond. A hotspot for the acid house movement in the late 1980s, the superclub left an indelible mark on music, fashion, and alternative ideas, helping to bring underground clubbing and its associated subcultures into the mainstream.

This book tells the story of these subcultures through the eyes of the people that lived them, with rare, unseen photographs depicting the iconic scenes of a club that has been named one of England’s most important historic sites.

Its legacy in pioneering Manchester’s rich club culture lives on through its worldwide event series and, just recently, The Warehouse Project announced the line-up for its annual Haçienda party. The night will see appearances from DJs who either played at the Haçienda in its heyday, or whose music shaped the Haçienda sound, including Orbital, DJ Paulette, David Morales, Kerri Chandler, Armand Van Helden and more.

A celebratory book launch will take place on October 9 at he New Century Hall in Manchester. With tickets priced at £51, the event will be a special chance to relive the days of the Haçienda with a panel talk featuring key figures from the club’s history including Peter Hook, resident DJs Graeme Park and Greg Wilson, general manager Ang Matthews, party promoter Paul Cons, fashion designer Ian Griffiths, alt-cabaret legend ‘The Divine’ David Hoyle, Noel Gallagher and Mani from the Stone Roses.

After the panel talk, attendees will be able to purchase a signed copy of the book while listening to DJ sets from Peter Hook, Graeme Park, Jon Dasilva, Hewan Clarke, Guy Williams, Lady Bump and Michelle Kelly.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to three charities: AKT (formerly known as the Albert Kennedy Trust), Mind, and Sarcoma.
