A street in California named “Tupac Shakur Way” in honour of late rapper

27 years on from his death, Tupac Shakur has been honoured with the newly unveiled Oakland street titled Tupac Shakur Way.

The street is a stretch of the MacArthur Boulevard, where the hip hop artist lived during the ’90s.

The unveiling ceremony was a who’s-who of Bay Area hip hop legends with the likes of E-40, MC Hammer, Money-B and Too $hort joining Shakur’s family in paying tribute to the late rapper.

AP reported that MC Hammer declared Tupac the “greatest rapper ever”, hands down and without question while E-40 celebrated his versatility in film, rap, poetry and ultimately “everything”.

“He made positivity, self esteem-lifting music for females, like ‘Dear Mama’ and ‘Brenda’s Got A Baby’,” lauded The Click founder.

Sekyiwa Shakur, the hip hop great’s sister, toasted to his legacy: “let his spirit live on the rest of these years in these streets and in your hearts.”

In a council statement, city councilwoman Carrol Fife, who was instrumental in the push to rename the street, honoured the rapper’s “legacy and contribution to Oakland California.”

“With what seemed to be effortless skill, this Black Panther Party Cub influenced hearts and minds while highlighting the contradictions of the brand of ‘American exceptionalism’ that ‘has money for wars but can’t feed the poor’.”

“Tupac will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time by his family and fans; touching countless lives of people all over the world, spanning several decades.”

The city council in Oakland had unanimously voted to rename the street after Fife introduced legislation to rename MacArthur Boulevard between Grand and Van Buren Avenue as Tupac Shakur Way in May.
