Sir Elton John has expressed concern over proposed cuts to local BBC Introducing radio stations across the UK.

In an Instagram post made yesterday, Elton criticised the move arguing that BBC Introducing is one of the “best ways for emerging artists to get airplay and find listeners from local to national radio”.

In January, the BBC announced that it would merge local Introducing shows putting many stations at risk of reductions and cancellations to service. The announcement sparked “grave concern” across the industry.

The changes will see shows in England and the channel islands cut back from 32 to 20, with the jobs of a number of producers and presenters potentially at risk.

Elton went on to add that, after reading reports of cuts to certain services, he “looks forward to seeing the BBC make good on their promise to continue to support up-and-coming acts and not compromise the essence of BBC Introducing.”
