A new episode of Beats In Space featuring the late techno legend Silent Servant is set to air this week in honour of his birthday.

The podcast features a mix and interview recorded with Silent Servant in late 2023 just months before his death and is set to air ahead of what would have been his 47th birthday on August 14.

In a tweet posted yesterday (August 7), podcast host Tim Sweeney explained: “This Friday’s radio show was a difficult episode to put together but it’s dedicated to the late Silent Servant.”

“We recorded a mix and interview at the very end of 2023 just before his tragic passing in January,” he added alongside a photo of the late musician.

The episode will air on Friday, August 9, at 4PM EST time (9PM BST), and will be streamed on Apple Music 1 Radio.

Tim Sweeney quoted Silent Servant on Twitter, writing: “This is what I think techno music and DJing can be just kind of mixing genres. Because at the end of the day, it’s all drum machine music, so it can all work together even if it’s from different genres.”

Silent Servant passed away in January 2024. The LA-based DJ and producer, real name John Juan Mendez, had a music career spanning more than 30 years.

He was known for his work as part of the Sandwell District collective, running across 2002 to 2011 when the group disbanded, helping to inform a shift in the sound of techno through the ‘00s.

Towards the end of 2023, Mendez released his final work, ‘In Memoriam’, looking back at his previous work in a “deeply personal memoir of a 30-plus year career spent exploring and absorbing the shadowy side of music”.
