Floating Points has released a new single, ‘Birth4000’, on Ninja Tune, the DJ and producer’s first solo release of the year.

‘Birth4000’ has been a staple of Daphni, Peggy Gou, Ben UFO, Call Super and Four Tet’s DJ sets, appearing on the latter’s The Lot Radio show late last year and sparking a flurry of track ID requests.

Sam Shepherd’s latest effort offers shades of Giorgio Moroder’s ‘I Feel Love’ with its noodling bassline riff. The artist described the song as a “weird patch [that] became less weird”. In true Flo Po style it shifts and twists across almost five minutes of arpeggios, hissing machines and a thumping kick drum.

‘Birth4000’ is accompanied by an alive painting visualiser by Akiko Nakayama: the Japanese artist pipettes watercolours to create ever-shifting images in real time over the course of the four-minute track.

The Eglo Records co-founder has had a busy year which has included the live debut of ‘Promises’, Shepherd’s collaboration with the late Pharoah Sanders, at the Hollywood Bowl, and performances at Glastonbury, Stone Island presents London, where he performed a nearly 20-minute-long version of ‘Birth4000’, and HERE at Outernet.

Floating Points will finish off 2023 with gigs at RSO.BERLIN and a set of shows in Brazil in late November, with performances in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo already confirmed.
