Long-running Glasgow nightclub The Shed has announced its closure in September, citing industry struggles and problems with the upkeep of the building.

The club, which has been operating for 26 years in Shawlands near Queen’s Park, confirmed that its final event will take place on September 14, 2024.

“After many sleepless nights (you think we’d be used to it by now) we’ve made the difficult decision to close the Shed Nightclub,” the club announced on Instagram over the weekend.

“The iconic building, like its custodians, has aged and hospitality demands constant innovation, energy and support to keep going. It is no secret that this industry is struggling.”

Owners pointed to a recent study of the UK’s music industry from the Night Time Industries Association which “suggests that, at its current rate, the UK may have no nightclubs by 2030”.

The Shed first opened in Glasgow in 1998 on the site of a former entertainment hall, which had operated as a hospitality venue since the 1920s hosting cabaret shows, comedy nights, and more.

The team behind the venue said that they hope the site will “flourish” in whatever form it takes, but noted that it will not remain a nightclub any longer.

“This place has meant so much to so many over the years, not least our amazing staff, who have contributed so much,” they wrote. “Our biggest achievement will always be the army of Shed Babies that wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for this institution.”

The Shed’s staff will be “supported through the transition”, owner Michele Pagliocca told the BBC. In an interview with The Herald, Pagliocca said he was “overwhelmed” by the number of fans looking for tickets to the club’s final parties.

“We’ve had people reaching out from all over Glasgow and beyond, with some cutting holidays short to be here,” he said. “Customers are sharing their memories and asking how they can be part of this final chapter.”

The final club night at the venue takes place on Saturday, September 14, following a series of send-off events over the coming weekends.
