Marcel Dettman set to perform at Sven Marquardt exhibition opening in Istanbul

Berghain bouncer and famed photographer Sven Marquardt, is launching an exhibition in Istanbul on November 9 — with the live performance Slide locked in for its opening night.

Titled NACHTBLENDE, the exhibition will display 25 years of Berlin club culture through Marquardt’s photos featuring artists, friends, colleagues and acquaintances, with some taken in East Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Istanbul’s Goethe Institute will host NACHTBLENDE, running from November 9 to 26. Its opening night set to be embellished by the presentation of audio visual collaborative project Slide.

Slide comprises works from Marquadrt, lighting designer Lars Murasch and Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann. The performance will “combine music, photography and visual art, providing a journey through the history of a relationship and artist collaboration,” according to Marquadrt.

This isn’t the first time Dettmann and Marquardt have collaborated, having worked on the audio visual exhibition Black Box together. Black Box has been displayed all over the world, from Lagos, Nigeria to Vancouver, Canada.

Sven Marquardt, an East Berlin native, was a pivotal figure in the punk, new wave and arts scene emerging from Prenzlauer Berg in the mid ’80s. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in late 1989, the photographer halted his work to immerse himself in the city’s nightlife scene, returning to his cameras almost 10 years later.

This unadulterated dedication to club culture took Marquardt to Berghain in 2004, where he has been a bouncer ever since.

Outside of his work at the famed Berlin institution, Marquardt also lectures at the Ostkreuz School of Photography.
