Massive Attack have been announced as the latest headline act to appear at East London’s brand new LIDO Festival, due to debut at Victoria Park this summer.

The band are set to bring their sustainable show to LIDO on Friday, June 6, with a performance entirely powered by battery in a bid to “significantly reduce carbon emission and local air pollution”.

The performance marks Massive Attack’s first London festival show in nine years, and the latest in a “landmark” series of decarbonisation events.

Last year, Massive Attack heralded in 25 years of climate activism with a special, one-off gig – and their first in the UK in more than five years. Their ACT 1.5 decarbonisation show took place in Bristol, described as a “large-scale climate action accelerator”.

Now, the band will bring their climate-friendly show to London with a special live show in collaboration with United Visual Artists and documentarist Adam Curtis, promising to “set a gold standard for environmentally conscious outdoor concerts in the capital”.

“To present London’s first-ever 100% battery powered festival day with a dynamic range of artists is an optimum outcome for us,” says Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja.

“History shows it’s often the combination of art and science that overcomes the greatest challenges we face, so it’s good to see LIDO take learnings from our ACT1.5 event last year and apply those technologies to where they see emissions coming from.”

Performing alongside Massive Attack on the day are newly announced acts Air, Tirzah, and Yasiin Bey & The Alchemist, who team up on their new project, FORENSICS.

LIDO Festival takes place across two weekends in June. Previously announced headliners include Jamie xx and Charli xcx, alongside acts including A. G. Cook, Bladee, Romy, Panda Bear, John Glacier, Sampha, Arca, DJ Gigola, and more.
