Planning application submitted to reopen site of Peckham Palais as a nightclub

Peckham Palais could be reopened as a new nightclub, if a planning application submitted to Southwark Council gets the green light.

The disused Victorian building was once a venue for electronic music, as well as a Jones & Higgins department store before it was closed over a decade ago.

Currently, the building is at risk of demolition – and in 2021, according to News Shopper, the venue was named the UK’s most at-risk Victorian building.

Opened in 1867, the Neo-Renaissance building is described as “London’s most endangered building” and despite local campaigners’ efforts to get it recognised by Historic England, the venue would require extensive repairs.

However, a new planning proposal issued to Southwark Council last month could see the space transformed into a multi-floor nightclub.

As reported by London The Inside the club will be based in the basement with the ground level as a reception, the first floor as a bar with food, the second as an event space and the top floor working as an office and studio.

The application also hopes for the nightclub to host theatre performances, film screenings, dance and more.

As a nightclub, the proposal aims to open until 6AM on Fridays and Saturdays and until 5AM on Sundays.

DJ Mag reports that the new venue is planned to improve what an architectural firm described as a “lack of” live music venues in the area.

Southwark Council’s planning committee are currently looking into the planning application.
